What should parents look out for when booking an ultrasound for their pregnancy? 

Kayla gave us mamas some awesome advice for what to look for:

 “It is always important to make sure that your sonographer not only went to school for ultrasound but that they are also registered. After you complete all of the necessary schooling and clinical hours you are still not considered a sonographer until you have taken your registries for the specific areas of ultrasound that you are interested in performing exams on. For example, there are a lot of different registries such as OBGYN, abdomen (the abdominal organs and small parts such as the thyroid), vascular (all the veins and arteries), echocardiography (the heart), breast, etc. 

Some schools only teach the heart, veins, and arteries, so it’s important to ensure that your sonographer is registered in OBGYN. These schools do not learn ultrasound on pregnancy-related exams.”

There are two ways to find out if your sonographer is registered:

1. Ask them directly “Are you a diagnostic registered sonographer? Do you have your OBGYN registry?”
2. Verify through the ARDMS website by simply typing in their first and last name.

The importance of having a registered sonographer:

Kayla added: “I also wanted to touch on why it is so important that you choose a registered sonographer for your pregnancy-related ultrasounds. We are highly trained on keeping not only the baby safe, but also the mom. I am sure that no matter where you go for an ultrasound the person doing your ultrasound is caring, but they are not trained to detect abnormalities on you or your baby. We learn every organ in the body (and the baby’s body), how it works, and every different type of thing that could go wrong with it. I know most people are coming in just for cute images, but there have been so many times that I have caught things that have been missed on the ultrasounds at their doctor’s office or things that have just happened post-anatomy scan that wouldn’t have been caught otherwise.”

What are the best characteristics of an ultrasound technician? 

When searching for the best ultrasound clinic in Oklahoma City, it’s important to tune in to the personality of the sonographer. As exciting as an ultrasound is of your sweet baby, it can also be nerve-wracking and you want to ensure the professional is the right fit for you!

Having a sonographer who is patient with the process is important. Sometimes baby “hides” or is in a position that is difficult to examine. Having a sonographer who can stay calm and try different things to get the correct image of the baby creates a better experience. Fun fact: one time an ultrasound took a little over an hour long for me because baby boy was camera shy.

Self-control and empathy- being able to stay calm and collected. While many ultrasounds are happy with a great outcome, unfortunately, some ultrasounds show abnormalities and have sad endings. Knowing your sonographer can stay calm and collected with a hug-full of empathy if a concern arose is beneficial to the patient and family. 

Kayla shared: “My favorite part of being a sonographer is getting to share all of the happy moments with my patients and celebrating right there beside them. From hearing that first heartbeat (or the exciting moments of telling them there are 2 heartbeats!) to sharing the gender of their baby, to gushing at their adorable chubby cheeks in the end!”
