The newborn days and weeks right after your baby is born are incredibly special, filled with unforgettable moments and a whirlwind of emotions (thanks, hormones!). These first few days and weeks fly by, marking a precious milestone. As your OKC newborn photographer, I provide a way to capture these fleeting memories and create timeless keepsakes for your family.

This guide is designed to help you understand everything about your newborn photography session, from what to expect and when to schedule it to how to prepare for it. My goal is not only to preserve your baby’s earliest memories but also to provide you with a stress-free and meaningful experience that celebrates your growing family!

1. Reserve Your Newborn Photography Session

The first thing you need to do is reserve your session! This is super important because I have a limited number of newborn sessions each month. Completing the reservation form lets me know there is a sweet baby expected to arrive in the month of your due date, and you are on my radar. 

Please don’t stress, if your baby arrives early or late or needs NICU time- I will always accommodate that! I understand you cannot control when your baby arrives and when they are healthy enough to come to their session.

2. Book Your Newborn Consultation Call

Before your due date, schedule a virtual call with me! This gives us a chance to chat about session expectations and answer any questions you might have. We also decide on styling during this time. If you decide not to book a newborn session consultation call, then you are putting your trust in me to style your session for you!

3. Text/Call Me!

“Hey Ash, Baby is HERE!!” 😍 Ah, those are my favorite messages to get! I pray for each of you and your babies and knowing they have arrived safe and sound with a healthy mama puts my heart at ease.

Text or call me once your baby has arrived (within 24-48 hours please!) so I can officially put you on my schedule!

4. The Newborn Photography Session

Finally! The newborn session is here, your sweet little one in your arms is ready to be photographed. Your newborn session will take place at my studio:

When you first arrive at my studio, you will come upstairs to meet me. I will have the studio warm and cozy for your little one. If you’ve brought your immediate family, we will start with family and sibling photos. This way, if the siblings want to leave afterward, they can do so. They are always welcome to stay, of course. After the family shots, Mom and Dad can relax (and even take a nap, if needed!). 

I have a small kitchen in my studio available for snacks, bottle preparation, and so on. My studio is your home!

5. The Waiting Period…

Now you wait for your photos! I know, I know- it’s hard! My turn around time is 3 weeks for editing and as soon as I am done I will be in contact with you!

6. The Big Reveal!

Grab your tissues for the big photo reveal! Join me in my studio (or virtually, if you need to!) to view your photos. This is a special time to relax and truly enjoy the memories being presented to you. Your photos will tell the story of your snuggly, sweet baby ❤ 

During this reveal, you’ll have the opportunity to order photos from your newborn session. I will personally assist you with your photo ordering needs and answer any questions you may have along the way. Feel free to bring the family—the more, the merrier!

7. Stay in Touch

Even though your newborn photography session is complete doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing each other again! I will be checking in for those future milestones for you and baby because trust me, it goes fast, and you’ll want to freeze as many memories as you can.

Big Sibilings in Your Newborn Photography Session

When scheduling your newborn photography session, consider including older siblings. Welcoming a new baby is a special moment for the entire family! Involving big siblings not only creates timeless memories but also helps them feel proud, loved, and engaged in this new chapter of life. From gentle cuddles to sweet giggles, these moments beautifully capture the bond that is just beginning to grow between your little ones.

What Should I Bring to my Newborn Photography Session?

If you are a new mom with a newborn or experiencing your third, fourth, or fifth child, you don’t need to bring any additional props to your newborn session—just your diaper bag with diapers, wipes, and feeding supplies! As your OKC photographer, I provide all the necessary props, including swaddles, headbands, bows, buckets, baskets, backdrops, and more. However, if you have a special prop that is meaningful to your family, feel free to bring it along!

Before your visit to my studio, we will have a consultation call to discuss the specifics of your newborn session. After you book your session, we will schedule this call to go over props, colors, wraps, and poses that you want for your customized newborn session. I will ensure that all the necessary props and equipment are ready when you arrive, so your session goes smoothly.

Baby Crying During their Newborn Session?

Babies cry, and that’s okay! Even after a diaper change or a big feeding, babies can still cry. As a pediatric nurse, mother, and safety-certified newborn photographer, I have learned a few tips that work almost every time to soothe an infant. Soothing your newborn during your newborn session is all about patience and calm energy. I always take the time to ensure that your little one feels safe, warm, and content. Gentle rocking, white noise, and soft swaddles mimic the comfort of the womb, while I keep my studio nice and toasty.
